"The Garden of Daisies", in Gaelic "Gort Na Noininead" is an Irish set dance in cut time and<br> D Major. The parts are played AABC (O'Neill/1850): AA'BB' (O'Neill/1001). This once popular<br> O'Neill said that this set dance was derived from a slow song air which was familiar to him<br> from his boyhood days in Ulster. The tune was entered into vol. 2 of the large mid-19th century<br> music manuscript collection of County Cork cleric and uilleann piper James Goodman.<br> Paul de Grae believes "Garden of Daisies" was derived from the air "Sliabh Geal gCua Na Feile".<br> There are two versions printed in O'Neill's 1850 Melodies. This is the second tune.<br> Traditional set dances are done in the faster tempos ("fast jig", "fast hornpipe").<br> There are five traditional sets: "St. Patrick's Day" (treble jig), "The Blackbird" (hornpipe),<br> "Job of Journeywork" (hornpipe), "The Garden of Daisies" (hornpipe), and "King of the Fairies"<br> (hornpipe).<br> These dances are "set" in the choreography, meaning no teacher can change the choreography,<br> though each school will perform the dance slightly different than the others.<br> It was printed in Hardebeck's A Collection of Jigs and Reels vol. 2 (1921), O'Neill's Music of<br> Ireland: 1850 Melodies (1903), O'Neill's Dance Music of Ireland: 1001 Gems (1907). <br> It was recorded by Paddy Keenan on Na Keen Affair, Finbar Furey, Seamus Ennis, Paddy Moloney and<br> Sean Potts, De Dannan and Michael Gallagher (uilleann pipes) {c. 1920's}. <br>
